Alberta SCN-MEDEC Initiative white paper part one
At the 2017 MEDEC MedTech Conference, we were pleased to release part one of a white paper outlining an initiative MEDEC is collaborating on with health system partners in Alberta (Alberta Health Services’ Strategic Clinical Networks and Alberta Innovates) focusing on the adoption of innovation. The white paper, The SCN-MEDEC Initiative: A Systems Approach in the Management of Health Technology – Part 1: Necessity, Design and Approach,
explores some of the challenges with the current approach to the adoption of innovative medical technologies in Canada and presents an alternate approach that the partners have taken that seeks to overcome these challenges.
Inspired by the ground-breaking collaborative work between Alberta’s Strategic Clinical Networks (SCNs) and MEDEC to validate a needs-based, system focused approach to adopting and managing innovation, a multidisciplinary working group was established by MEDEC in 2016. The group’s mandate was to define and create simple principles which would capture the key elements of a value-based approach to the management of products and solutions in the health care system. To attain a common and balanced perspective, the working group consisted of innovative public and private sector leaders from clinical and business enterprise departments across Canada. The process involved researching existing theories, practices and concepts and then identifying the common and vital elements for change. The
resulting principles highlight the key areas of focus and serve as a guide and gauge against which industry and our health care partners can measure progress.
