Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Government of Canada team up to launch Canadian Business Resilience Network to help businesses get through COVID-19

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has established the Canadian Business Resilience Network (CBRN) in partnership with the Government of Canada to help the business community prepare, persevere and, ultimately, prosper in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. A website (cbrn.ca) serves as a central hub for credible information on business support programs and other tools and insights. 


Ontario expands emergency child care; includes medical device manufacturing workers

The Ontario government announced that is expanding the list of essential workers eligible to receive emergency child care and we are very pleased to report that the list includes, "medical supplies and device manufacturing workers". The government's news release on this can be found here.


Free CSA Standards

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group) has made a selection of relevant standards available for no-fee view access through the online platform at the following link:  COVID-19 Response Standards and Handbooks / Normes pour faire face au COVID-19

The following standards are currently included:

  • CAN/CSA-Z1630-17, Community paramedicine: Framework for program development Z317.10-15, Handling of health care waste materials
  • CAN/CSA-Z317.13-17, Infection control during construction, renovation, and maintenance of health care facilities
  • Z317.14-17, Wayfinding for health care facilities
  • Z1003.1-18, Psychological health and safety in the paramedic service organizations CAN/CSA-Z1003-13/BNQ 9700-803/2013 (R18), Psychological health and safety in the workplace – Prevention, promotion, and guidance to staged implementation
  • SPE Z1003 Implementation Handbook, Assembling the Pieces: An Implementation Guide to the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace

Prime Minister announces production of more medical supplies and equipment in Canada

Canada-U.S. temporary border closure

The Prime Minister announced the temporary closure of the Canada-U.S. border as part of the response to COVID-19. The government has indicated that all essential and business travel will continue unimpeded.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection provides important information regarding exports of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from the U.S. to Canada

Link to Memo:Updated Guidance for the Presidential Memorandum Regarding Allocating Certain Scarce of Threatened Health or Medical Resources to Domestic Use

Please note that on page two of the memo it indicates that exports to Canada from the U.S. are excluded from the measures the US government is putting in place to withhold key products for U.S. use.Medtech Canada encourages members who export PPE from the U.S. to Canada to consult their own legal counsel on this matter.


Canada Border Services Agency Customs Notice for Importation of Medical Supplies
The Canadian Border Services Agency posted a notice to importers of medical supplies, “to help inform the commercial importing community of the tariff classification number and other potentially useful information for the importation of certain medical supplies”.  

One particularly key element is that they’re asking importers of COVID-19 related products to label them, ‘URGENT – COVID-19’. From the notice:  

“At this time, we request that importers add the term ‘URGENT – COVID-19’ for goods description in release information submitted to the CBSA for all medical devices being imported to Canada for this purpose.”
