Surgical Backlogs in Canada Due to COVID-19: The Crisis Behind the Crisis?

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented backlog of surgical cases across Canada. During the first wave, surgical departments were directed to cancel thousands of scheduled surgeries and procedures to preserve bed capacity for patients with COVID-19. The second and third waves have exacerbated this situation, and in some provinces, gains made between wave one and two were eliminated. The consequences of delaying medically necessary services has proven significant for patients, with many experiencing the worsening of their conditions. This directly impacts a patients' quality of life and mortality, especially those with chronic conditions and later-stage cancers. Expert panelists from Western Canada  and industry will come together to explore and discuss regional variations in managing surgical backlogs, the successes and failures, and how together we can take those lessons learned to tackle the challenge going forward.

Specifically, panelists will explore:

  • How different regions, systems, structure and processes (before and during the pandemic), managed surgical backlogs;
  • Lessons learned that can inform new ways to address access to delayed procedures;
  • Ideas and insights on the role innovation and technology can play; and
  • What opportunities exist to leverage partnerships locally, nationally and across providers and industry.

  • Moderator:Terri Lohnes, Senior Vice-President, Optimus SBR
  • Dr. Sam Bugis, General Surgeon and Vice President, Physician Affairs & Specialist Practice, Doctors of B.C.
  • Stacey Litvinchuk, Senior Provincial Director for Provincial Surgery Utilization, Alberta Health Services
  • Dave O’Neil, General Manager, Smith & Nephew and Medtech Canada Board Chair
